Stephen King books include standalone novels, several separate series, story collections and nonfiction. Choose Carrie, Misery or The Shining by premise before treating the full book list as a reading order. For the Dark Tower, follow its own core sequence. The dated reference below separates works from revised editions and names the Richard Bachman name without creating a second author to read first.
There is no single needed order across King's whole shelf. Publication order can be a historical project; story order matters within a series. This page uses the author's individual work records and labels date limits. It does not count adaptations as novels or a revised edition as a sequel. Shorter fiction and collaborations also need their own form and authorship checks before you choose an edition.
Stephen King books and publication order
The table covers the official catalogue's novel, Bachman, collection and nonfiction book categories. Films and TV are outside its scope. So are comics and individual short-story or poem records.
A separate table lists the catalogue's novella records. It does not attempt to list every short work or foreword.
Years come from individual work pages, which can differ from the all-works index. Danse Macabre, On Writing and several Bachman titles show that difference. For those works, use the date on the work page. A new edition has its own date.
Some first-printing dates need more care. The Eyes of the Dragon and Cycle of the Werewolf have earlier limited-edition histories than the listed trade years. The table marks that limit.
The first year of Dolores Claiborne is left open. Its work page alone does not settle the first-printing date.
The Green Mile has one row for its six serial parts. The later collected edition is not a new sequel. The revised Gunslinger is a version of the same work.
Added art also changes an edition. The longer Stand text stays in the table. It helps you check which version a guide means.

Novellas and shorter book records
The official catalogue also lists novellas on their own work pages. Some are separate books. Others appear inside a collection.
This table keeps those pieces visible without counting each as a new full-length novel. A shared title can name a piece and its containing volume.
The year here is the release field on that novella's work page. It may date an appearance rather than the first time the text existed in any form. Use the containing title to check overlap. A novella sold on its own may repeat a piece you already own in a larger volume.
| Novella | Work-page year | Containing volume or form |

Do not treat every novella as horror. Form says how a work is packaged or described, not which kind of fear it uses. Check its premise separately. A title on this list names the work; it is not a claim that all these pieces suit the same reader.
Novels, collections and other Stephen King books
A novel sustains one work. A collection holds separate pieces. Some link together.
Some mix forms. An omnibus puts older books in one volume. Check the form before you treat each row as a new story.
Different Seasons holds longer pieces. They are not all horror. Check the contents of Hearts in Atlantis too.
Its linked pieces are not one plain novel. A reprint may hold work you own.
Nonfiction is a separate task. On Writing concerns craft and memoir. Danse Macabre examines horror across forms.
Neither is a step in a horror series. Read them if their topics appeal. You do not need them before the fiction.
Shared work keeps its credits. The Talisman and Black House were written with Peter Straub. Sleeping Beauties also credits Owen King.
Gwendy's Final Task is shared work with Richard Chizmar. A place on a King shelf does not mean he wrote it alone.
The official work page dates Other Worlds Than These to October 6, 2026. It calls it the final Talisman trilogy volume. That makes an old two-book Talisman list incomplete as a current book list.
That is a series fact. No plot outcome is given here.
Richard Bachman and pseudonyms
Richard Bachman is King's pen name. Use that name to check an edition. It is not a second writer to read first. The work pages mark which books use the name.
The Rage page says King asked for no future printings. Its row records the work. It is not a prompt to buy it.
A used copy is not a new edition. A familiar omnibus name does not prove what is in that copy.
The Bachman Books is itself an omnibus record. Check the actual contents of a copy. A matching title on two editions needn't guarantee identical included works.
That concerns the edition. It does not mean the novels share one plot.
Series and recurring settings
The Dark Tower reading order owns the central quest sequence. The connections guide maps a selected set of wider links with spoiler controls. A link can be fun to spot. It need not be homework.
The Shining comes before Doctor Sleep in that continuation. The Talisman comes before Black House in Jack Sawyer's route, with the current third volume named above. Follow each series on its own. There is no need to force all the novels into one line.
Recurring place names also need care. Two stories can use a setting without making one a sequel to the other. A returning person is a stronger link than a shared mood.
Even that need not mean you must read all the books in release order. The connections page keeps those evidence types apart.
Where new readers should start
Use the beginner reading route for a choice by form, supernatural preference and content boundary. Carrie gives a focused supernatural premise. Misery offers human control.
The Shining isolates a family at a hotel. A collection offers separate story trials.
The fear-focused King guide is a different task from a book list or a broad best-books ranking. It groups reading choices by dread and threat. An important work may not give you the scare you want next.
You don't need to start a large cast or a long quest just because it is famous. A first work should let you test a voice you want to follow. Afterward, keep the trait that worked rather than reading the next release by habit.
Edition and source checks
Check the title and author credits on your copy. Then check its contents and edition note. A copyright year can describe a version or included piece.
A paperback release date describes that object. State what the date means.
The work links below make the date basis inspectable. They can contain character lists and plot spoilers, so use them carefully on a first read. A good date source may still spoil a plot.
If two records disagree, preserve both and narrow the question. It may date a serial or a small first printing. It may date a later trade release or revised text.
Keep that scope clear. Leave the date open when the sources do not settle it.
FAQ
Should Stephen King books be read in order?
Use a series order where the story continues. Across standalone novels and unrelated collections, choose by interest unless you want a historical reading project. A complete author book list is a reference, not a compulsory route. It also contains nonfiction and reprint objects that are not new episodes of a shared story.
Does a new edition count as a new book?
It can be a new physical object without being a new work. Revised text, illustrations, notes and bindings need an edition label. A sequel has a separate story role. The table keeps the expanded Stand text visible while excluding several packaging-only reissues from the main work list.
Are Richard Bachman books separate from Stephen King?
Bachman is King's pen name. The label helps name how a work was issued. It doesn't show a separate authorial continuity or a needed reading order. Use the individual work and its actual series context, and check omnibus contents rather than assuming every Bachman-labelled volume contains the same material.
Verdict on Stephen King books
Use Stephen King books as several reading routes, not one needed shelf. Start with a premise, follow a series when it actually continues, and keep collections and editions distinct. The book list helps name the work you want; the linked starting, fear and sequence guides help decide how to read it.
