Horror Books: Demons

by The Undead Rat on May 27, 2009

“It was just possible, she knew, that given a chance — once her head, say, came within reach of its talons — the Gnasher would kill her, and kill her gleefully, even if it did disrupt the Spirit Princes’ agenda. It was more than impulsiveness — the Princes had no sense of human values and did not always place planning ahead of murderous delight.”

Demons have invaded the earth and are subjugating — if not outright devouring — humanity. Only a small group of people understand what is happening and can hope to combat it. But time is running out because the Demons are hunting for the one thing that could send them back.

SUMMARY:

Demons is actually two short novels in one:

Demons

In Demons, Ira, Professor Israel Paymenz and his daughter Melissa are thrown together when the demons, all seven clans of them, appear from the sky and from the ground. It is a massive wide scale attack throughout the world by grotesque creatures human sized and larger which cannot be harmed by conventional means and reassemble if destroyed by heavy missile attack. They consume humans for food, usually after playing with their victims first, and destroy property wantonly.

“The miraculous rarely shows itself. When it does, it comes seamlessly, and for some reason, everyone is surprised.”

Israel is a member of the Conscious Circle for Humanity, a group of individuals who have attained enlightenment or are in the process of achieving it. They have planned for an attack on humanity on an epic scale and planted within Melissa The Urn of Gold — the consciousness of the Circle members who have passed away. It falls to Ira to keep Melissa safe until the nature of the demonic invasion can be determined.

But the demon clans know about the Urn of Gold and they know they must destroy it — and Melissa — too.

Undercurrent

In Undercurrent nine years have passed since the demonic invasion.

Stephen Isquerat has the ability to leave his body and travel into realms beyond our reality. He is unwittingly being groomed by the Undercurrent, a group that is the opposite of the Conscious Circle for Humanity. They need him to be their retriever: The one who will fetch the Black Pearl from That Certain One (The Deceiver) which would allow the the Undercurrent to control a demon spirit prince granting them all immortality and unlimited power.

But the trip is fraught with danger to Stephen’s sanity. Meanwhile, the Conscious Circle for Humanity are gathering to make their bid to stop him before all humanity pays for his actions.

APPEAL:

Demons are an appeal factor, but these are not just any old demons. These are unearthly critters that can’t be killed. Shirley puts several twists on old themes — including the fact that the demons aren’t possessing people but people are possessing the demons (read it and figure it out).

It also has a secret society of people who have achieved enlightenment and a second secreter society of people who have achieved some level of enlightenment and the power that goes with it but let their base nature take them into some bad directions.

People who like unique stories, or pitting the protagonists against overwhelming odds will enjoy this book.
